Five days later he made his ODI debut against Pakistan in Chennai and bowled Mohammad Hafeez with his very first ball. He made his Test debut against Australia in February 2013. He was a key bowler in India's 2013 ICC Champions Trophy win and was named in the ICC Team of the Tournament.

During the 2014 tour of England he took 6/82 at Lord's, helping India win the Test. He was named India's Player of the Series. In February 2018 he took 5/24 against South Africa in Johannesburg, becoming the first Indian bowler with a five-wicket haul in all three international formats. He also won the 2016 and 2018 Asia Cups with India and played in the 2019 ODI World Cup.
