In her first attempt at the UPSC Civil Services Examination (2012) she qualified for the Indian Police Service (IPS). She appeared again and secured All India Rank 68, joining the Indian Administrative Service in the 2013 batch, Uttar Pradesh cadre.
During 13 years in the IAS she held several field and secretariat postings in Uttar Pradesh, including:
Reports also mention senior roles in state rural development and industrial bodies.
In Mirzapur she led efforts to supply drinking water to villages in the Vindhya hills. Under her, tap water reached Lahuriadah, a hill village in Halia block, for the first time in 75 years. When she was transferred from Mirzapur, local residents – especially women – gave her an emotional farewell with flowers, and videos of it went viral. As DM of Deoria she drew attention for publicly saying that officials should not be pressured over transfers and postings.
On 30 August 2026 Divya Mittal announced on X that she had voluntarily resigned from the IAS, "bringing to an end an unforgettable journey of 13 years". She said true power comes from the people rather than from any post. The Central Government accepted her resignation in September 2026.
On 15 October 2026, at a gathering in Mirzapur, she announced her political party, Jan Neeti Bharat (also written Jan-niti Bharat Party). The party says it will put citizens at the centre of policymaking and keep elected representatives accountable throughout their term. It plans to contest the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, starting with the Chunar seat, and aims to field candidates across the state's 403 seats where it finds strong contenders.
