Shami made his ODI debut against Pakistan on 6 January 2013. In his Test debut against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in November 2013, he took 9 wickets – the best match figures by an Indian pacer on Test debut. He made his T20I debut in March 2014.
Shami became a key member of India's bowling attack across formats, especially in Tests. Highlights from this period:
He overcame several injuries, including knee surgery after the 2015 World Cup and a broken arm in Australia in 2020.
Brought into the team mid-tournament, Shami had a sensational 2023 Cricket World Cup at home. He took 24 wickets, the most by any bowler, including three five-wicket hauls. In the semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium on 15 November 2023 he took 7/57, the best figures by an Indian in ODIs, and became the fastest bowler to 50 World Cup wickets.
An ankle injury after the World Cup required surgery and kept him out for over a year. He returned for Bengal and then for India. He was one of India's key bowlers in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which India won, and he reached 200 ODI wickets during the tournament.
In October 2026 he was not selected for any of India's squads for the tour of New Zealand. The BCCI did not give a public reason. Shami said the omission was "not my loss" and that he had proved his fitness playing for Bengal.
