Nana Patekar Early Life

Nana Patekar was born on 1 January 1951 in Murud-Janjira, in Maharashtra's Raigad district. His father loved theatre and encouraged him to watch plays from a young age, and that early exposure shaped his future. His father died of a heart attack when Nana was 28.

He studied at the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art in Mumbai. In those years he moved into Marathi theatre. His first play was directed by the celebrated theatre director Vijaya Mehta, and the stage became the training ground for his raw, realistic acting style.
