Career

Behind the scenes (2004–2018)

For many years Priyanka Gandhi campaigned for her family without holding a party post. In 2004 she managed her mother's campaign in Rae Bareli and helped with her brother's campaign in Amethi. In the 2007 Uttar Pradesh election she focused on the ten assembly seats of the Amethi–Rae Bareli region.

Formal entry into politics (2019–2023)

  • January 2019: Appointed AICC General Secretary in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh. She became in charge of the whole state in September 2020.
  • October 2021: Detained by Uttar Pradesh Police while trying to visit Lakhimpur Kheri after the deaths of farmers there.
  • 2022 UP election: Led the Congress campaign with the slogan "Ladki Hoon, Lad Sakti Hoon" ("I am a girl, I can fight") and gave 40% of tickets to women. The Congress won 2 of 403 seats.
  • 2023: Stepped down as general secretary in charge of Uttar Pradesh in December 2023 and continued as an AICC general secretary.

Member of Parliament, Wayanad (2024–present)

When Rahul Gandhi kept Rae Bareli after winning two seats in 2024, the Congress fielded Priyanka in the Wayanad by-election. On 23 November 2024 she won with 6,22,338 votes and a margin of 4,10,931, larger than her brother's margin there earlier that year. She took the oath as a Lok Sabha member on 28 November 2024. Her first speech in Parliament was during the debate on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution, and she later spoke in the Lok Sabha debate on Operation Sindoor.

2026

She campaigned in the 2026 assembly elections, including in Kerala, where the Congress-led UDF returned to power, and in Assam. In October 2026 she took part in opposition protests in Delhi against the Election Commission over the revision of electoral rolls. Delhi Police named her among opposition leaders in FIRs registered over the protests.
