Rashmika Mandanna was born on 5 April 1996 in Virajpet, Kodagu district, Karnataka, into a Kodava Hindu family. Her father, Madan Mandanna, owns a coffee estate and a function hall in Virajpet. Her mother, Suman, is a homemaker. She has a younger sister, Shiman. She has said that her family went through financial hardship when she was a child.
She studied at Coorg Public School, a boarding school in Gonikoppal. She then earned a bachelor's degree in psychology, journalism and English literature at M. S. Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Bengaluru.
In 2014 she won The Times of India's Clean & Clear Fresh Face title and became the brand's ambassador. In 2015 she won the second season of La Mode Bangalore's Top Model Hunt. She was not planning to act, but a college professor persuaded her to audition.
