Rohit played domestic cricket for Mumbai, scoring 309* against Gujarat in the 2009 Ranji Trophy. He made his ODI debut against Ireland in Belfast on 23 June 2007. He was part of the team that won the first ICC World Twenty20 in 2007. Despite his talent, his early international career was inconsistent.
In 2013, MS Dhoni made him an ODI opener, and the move transformed his career. Key moments:
Rohit took over as India's white-ball captain in late 2021 and Test captain in February 2022. He led India to the 2023 Asia Cup and to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where India lost to Australia. On 29 June 2024 he captained India to the T20 World Cup title in Barbados, and then retired from T20Is. This made him the only Indian to win the T20 World Cup twice (2007 and 2024). In March 2025 he led India to the ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai.
He announced his retirement from Test cricket on 7 May 2025. In October 2025 Shubman Gill replaced him as ODI captain, though Rohit continued as an ODI opener.
Rohit won the 2009 IPL with Deccan Chargers. He joined Mumbai Indians in 2011, became captain in 2013, and led them to five titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020). Hardik Pandya replaced him as captain in 2024, and he continues to play for MI as a batter.
On 23 June 2026 he received the Padma Shri from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. On 19 July 2026 he scored 138 at Lord's, becoming the first Indian to score an ODI hundred there and the oldest Indian to make an ODI century. In the home ODI series against West Indies in October 2026 he scored a century in Guwahati and passed 12,000 ODI runs. He is in India's ODI squad for the New Zealand tour.
