Career

Under-19 World Cup and debut (2008–2010)

Kohli captained India to victory at the 2008 ICC Under-19 World Cup in Malaysia. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on 18 August 2008. He quickly became a regular in the ODI side and was part of the squad that won the 2011 World Cup at home.

Rise as a run machine (2011–2016)

He made his Test debut against the West Indies in June 2011. His first Test hundred came at Adelaide in 2012. After MS Dhoni retired from Tests during the 2014–15 tour of Australia, Kohli became India's Test captain. He was also a key batter in the 2013 Champions Trophy win.

Captaincy era (2017–2022)

Kohli became India's captain in all formats in 2017. Under him India:

  • Became the top-ranked Test side
  • Won a first-ever Test series in Australia (2018–19)
  • Reached the 2019 World Cup semi-final and the 2021 World Test Championship final

He led India in 68 Tests and won 40, the most by any Indian captain. He gave up the T20I captaincy in 2021, and the ODI and Test captaincy by early 2022. His unbeaten 82 against Pakistan at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Melbourne is considered one of the greatest T20 innings.

Records and titles (2023–2025)

  • 15 November 2023: Scored his 50th ODI century in the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium, breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record of 49. He finished that World Cup with 765 runs, the most in a single edition.
  • 29 June 2024: Scored 76 in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa to win Player of the Match, then retired from T20Is.
  • 12 May 2025: Retired from Test cricket with 9,230 runs and 30 hundreds in 123 Tests.
  • 2025: Won the ICC Champions Trophy with India.

IPL

Kohli has played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru since the first IPL season in 2008, and is the league's leading run-scorer. He captained RCB from 2013 to 2021. After 17 years without a title, he won the IPL with RCB in 2025, beating Punjab Kings in the final, and again in 2026.

2026

Kohli continues to play ODIs for India. He played in the home series against the West Indies in September–October 2026 and has been named in India's ODI squad for the New Zealand tour.
