Career

Struggle years (2005–2010)

After Fame Gurukul, Arijit stayed in Mumbai and won the TV show 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil. With the prize money he set up his own studio. For several years he worked behind the scenes as a music programmer and assistant for composers such as Pritam, Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Vishal–Shekhar and Mithoon, recording scratch vocals and learning production.

Playback debut and breakthrough (2011–2013)

His first released Hindi film song was "Phir Mohabbat" from Murder 2 (2011), composed by Mithoon. In 2012 "Raabta" (Agent Vinod) and songs from Barfi! got him noticed. The turning point came in 2013 with "Tum Hi Ho" from Aashiqui 2. The song topped the charts, and it won him his first Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer.

Leading voice of Hindi cinema (2014–2025)

Over the next decade he became the most in-demand male playback singer in Hindi cinema. His hits from this period include:

  • "Sooraj Dooba Hain" (Roy)
  • "Gerua" (Dilwale)
  • "Agar Tum Saath Ho" (Tamasha)
  • "Channa Mereya" and the title track of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil
  • "Hawayein" (Jab Harry Met Sejal)
  • "Binte Dil" (Padmaavat)
  • "Ae Watan" (Raazi)
  • "Khairiyat" (Chhichhore)
  • "Kesariya" (Brahmāstra)
  • "Apna Bana Le" (Bhediya)
  • "Satranga" (Animal)
  • "Sajni" (Laapataa Ladies)

He also composed music, sang extensively in Bengali, and in July 2020 launched his own independent label, Oriyon Music.

Concerts and global reach

Arijit became one of India's biggest live acts, with sold-out arena shows in India, the UK (including The O2 and Wembley in London), the UAE, the USA and elsewhere. The Guardian reviewed his four-hour London show in September 2024.

In February 2025, Ed Sheeran visited him in Jiaganj, and the two were filmed riding a scooter through the town. Arijit later featured on Sheeran's song "Sapphire" (2025).

Retirement from playback (2026)

On 27 January 2026, Arijit announced on social media that he would no longer take new playback assignments, though he would finish existing commitments. He clarified that he would not stop making music and planned to focus on independent and classical work. Days later, Aamir Khan visited him at his home in Jiaganj.

On 5 October 2026 he announced a nine-city India stadium tour running from January to May 2027. The cities are Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Mumbai, Bengaluru, New Delhi, Pune, Indore and Hyderabad. The tour celebrates two decades of his music career.
