In 1998, at the age of 26, Yogi Adityanath was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha from Gorakhpur, making him one of the youngest MPs of that time. He was re-elected in 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014, serving five consecutive terms.
His government has highlighted law and order, expressways and infrastructure, and investment summits as key priorities. Its use of demolitions ("bulldozer action") against properties of accused persons drew debate. In November 2024 the Supreme Court laid down nationwide guidelines requiring due process before any such demolition.
Uttar Pradesh hosted the Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj from January to February 2025. According to the state government, about 66 crore devotees attended. On 29 January 2025 a crowd crush near the Sangam left 30 people dead by the official count, and the state government ordered a judicial inquiry.
In October 2026 he publicly backed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh, saying ineligible names should be removed. The state is due to hold its next assembly election in 2027.
